Boost or Buck-Boost power conversion solutions are needed in a wide variety of applications. The 3.3V and 5V are common rails and it is not uncommon to need to boost to a higher voltage to support load requirements. This is the case for LED-Lighting applications, particularly in consumer, or portable devices, and back-light applications. Since the MCP1632 is a controller and requires an external power MOSFET, the power conversion topology can be sized, and optimized, for the load requirements, including the target output voltage and the amount of power (current) delivered to the load. This flexibility enables the designer the ability to optimize the design for his/her application, and make design tradeoffs that maximize the benefit to the target application.
