This slide shows a setup with a magnet at the end of the shaft and an encoder IC underneath it. The same setup can be used for any size and type of motor. For best start-up with maximum torque, the encoder provides absolute information. Once the rotor is in motion, the user can switch to incremental outputs and simply just count pulses. This makes it very easy for the motor controller to process the position data. UVW outputs can be used to replace three Hall switches 1:1 and at the same time still get the other absolute and incremental outputs (like for precise positioning tasks).
